After a thorough application process and receiving many qualified applicants, we are excited to announce that we will have 18 participants from across the university participate in the summer volunteer opportunity in Arusha, Tanzania. The group hails from 5 different countries, completing academic programs across 7 different undergraduate majors, with interests across various prehealth fields and general service areas. 5 participants are Tandon GLASS Honors students, yet the group consists of not only Tandon students, but also students from the College of Arts and Science that span between first-year students all the way to alumni! We look forward to having such a diverse group get to know each other and learn from on another during this trip.
Our location has been determined. Students will be spending two weeks August 13-26, 2023 in Arusha volunteering in healthcare settings. Participants are provided placement primarily in renowned hospital placements in and around Arusha. These hospital placements are located not very far from the volunteer accommodation and offer a variety of departments. Specialist departments such as dentistry and gynecology/obstetrics, midwifery, general wards and medicine, surgery are available. An example of placement where our participants volunteer/intern is Mount Meru hospital.
About the hospital
The history of Mt. Meru Hospital goes back to the First World War. It was probably initially established as a camp for treating casualties of that war. Over the years it gradually evolved into a hospital. A sign on the administration building mentions that the building was ordered by one Alfred de Rothschild and the fist stone was laid by a lady Rees on 11th November 1926. According to the healthcare delivery system in Tanzania, this hospital is a 2nd level referral hospital. It serves 18 other smaller district hospitals scattered all over the region. At present the hospital has a capacity of 450 beds.
